Dimension 2EW is Corteva’s liquid dithiopyr pre-emergent. It prevents crabgrass and a list of other grassy and broadleaf weeds, and unlike most pre-emergents it can also take out crabgrass in its earliest stage. That makes it the forgiving choice when your spring application runs late.

What it’s for
Dimension 2EW is the liquid pick in our crabgrass preventer roundup, and our author relies on it for larger lawns and late applications. It stops crabgrass, Poa annua, goosegrass and several broadleaf weeds as they germinate, and it will also control crabgrass that has only just come up.
The trade-off is staying power. Our roundup puts its residual at about 3–4 months, shorter than prodiamine, because dithiopyr breaks down faster with water and heat. Our crabgrass preventer timing guide uses dithiopyr as the early-summer second half of a split application, once soil reaches 65–70°F.
How to use it
Mix 0.5–0.73 fl oz in a gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft, depending on the weed, per the label. One gallon covers up to 46,720 sq ft at the rate in our roundup. Our Dimension 2EW calculator gives exact amounts for your lawn.
For a single spring application, aim to apply before soil temperatures reach 55°F; in the North that usually falls between February and May. Water it into the soil to activate it. On new lawns, wait until the grass has a sound root system and has been mowed at least twice after seeding or sodding.
Dithiopyr prunes roots, including those of young bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass, so only use it on well-rooted turf. It can briefly injure new growth; don’t spray grass stressed by heat, drought or frost. It also stops grass seed from establishing.
