The short answer
Nearly every decision in this section comes down to one thing: single storey with level ground and a ladder you trust is genuinely yours; anything above that isn’t, and it has nothing to do with competence. The second thing worth knowing is that a lot of gutter problems aren’t blockages at all — they’re pitch, capacity or discharge, and cleaning does nothing for any of them.

Four symptoms that look alike from the ground and need four different jobs.
Cleaning
Overflow along a whole run
Debris in the channel, plants growing, spilling in several places. This is the one cleaning fixes, and it works.
Repair
Overflow in one spot, every time
Pitch or a sag. The channel is holding water there rather than moving it. Cleaning changes nothing and it recurs within weeks.
Sizing
Overflow only in downpours
Undersized channel or too few downspouts. No amount of cleaning or sealing addresses capacity.
Drainage
Clean gutters, wet foundation
The gutter works and the discharge doesn’t. Usually a downspout emptying beside the wall, or a silted underground drain.
Why height is the whole argument
Gutter work isn’t technically difficult. Scooping a channel, sealing a joint, clipping on an extension — none of it needs a trade.
What it needs is to be done at height, repeatedly, with both hands occupied and your weight on a ladder. Falls from ladder height are the serious injury category in home maintenance, they happen in a fraction of a second, and the money saved on a gutter clean is not a sensible trade against them.
So the honest line through this whole section is: single storey, level ground, someone home to foot the ladder — yours. Anything else — not, and that isn’t a judgement about you.
Working out which job you need
From the ground, before anyone quotes.
Watch it in the rain
Where it overflows and whether it happens every time or only in heavy rain. That one observation separates cleaning from pitch from capacity.
Sight along the run
From one end at eye level. A dip is obvious from that angle and invisible from underneath.
Count the downspouts
One outlet on a long run of heavy roof is a capacity problem no repair addresses.
Follow the discharge
Where water lands and where it goes. Beside the wall, or onto ground sloping back, is the cheapest high-value fix there is.
Press the fascia
Where it’s stained. Any give and the timber is the actual job, whatever the gutter is doing.

Anything above single storey. The full-height rule, and the reason this section exists. Not skill — consequence.
Working from the roof. Standing on tiles or slates to reach a gutter is how people fall or go through the roof. If a ladder can’t reach it, someone with proper access equipment should.
Soft fascia. Gutters hang from that timber. Anything fixed into rotten wood pulls out, sometimes taking the board with it.

Common questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Twice a year for most houses. Three or four times where pines or spruces overhang, because needles shed year-round and mat tighter than leaves.
Why do my gutters overflow when they’re clean?
Pitch, capacity or discharge. Same spot every storm means the channel holds water there; only in heavy rain means too few downspouts for the roof.
Do gutter guards stop you needing to clean?
No. Good ones cut it from twice a year to occasionally. Foam and brush inserts trap debris in the channel and make it worse.
What’s the most common gutter mistake?
Discharging water beside the foundation. Extensions cost very little, fit at ground level in minutes, and fix more damp than any other single change.
