Cables have to run in the pattern that creates a continuous drainage path — a zigzag along the eave, down into the gutter, and through the downspout. A cable in the gutter alone melts water that then freezes in the downspout, which achieves nothing.
They also need a dedicated outdoor-rated circuit with GFCI protection. That’s an electrician, and it’s part of the cost people don’t anticipate.
