The short answer
Capacity comes from three things: the roof area draining to that run, the roof pitch, and local rainfall intensity. A steep roof delivers water faster than a shallow one of the same area, which effectively increases the load. And the channel is only half of it — a six-inch gutter feeding an undersized downspout is still limited by the downspout.

Do you need six inch?
Four conditions. Any one of them is a reasonable case.

A long unbroken run draining a substantial area concentrates flow at one outlet. This is the most common reason to go up a size.

Water arrives at the eave faster from a steep roof and has less time to enter the channel. Same area, higher peak flow.

A roof valley dumps the drainage of two planes into one short section of gutter. That section is often the one that overflows regardless of the rest.
Why the downspout is half the answer
The channel stores and conveys; the downspout is the drain. If water arrives faster than the outlet can take it, the channel fills and spills — and the size of the channel only changes how long that takes.
Which is why the most common fix for a system that overflows in heavy rain isn’t a bigger gutter, it’s another downspout. Adding an outlet halves the run each one serves, and it’s usually cheaper than replacing the channel.
The number that should be in your quote
Ask any installer what roof area they measured and how many downspouts that gives. An installer working from measurement will answer without hesitation. One who’s matching what was there before will be vague — and if what was there before overflowed, that’s exactly the outcome you’ll buy again.

Four things, and the first two you can observe yourself.
Watch it in heavy rain
Overflow only in downpours, on a clean correctly pitched gutter, means capacity. That’s the diagnosis before any measurement.
Count the downspouts
One outlet on a long run of substantial roof is a capacity problem regardless of channel size.
Look at the valleys
Where two roof planes meet, the section below takes both. Note whether that’s where it spills.
Ask for the roof area
From the installer. Capacity follows from it, and vagueness here means the system is being matched rather than sized.
When to go up a size
Where this stops being a DIY job
Changing channel size on an existing system. New outlets, new hangers and new downspout connections — effectively a replacement.
Adding downspouts. Cutting new outlets into an existing run is height work and the placement has to be right rather than convenient.
Any system that overflows and you don’t know why. Get it measured before buying anything. Replacing like-for-like reproduces the fault exactly.

What size gutter do I need?

Will bigger gutters stop the overflowing?
