Two facts change how this job should be done. Carpenter ants excavate wet or decaying wood, so there is a moisture source somewhere and it is the real repair. And the colony in your wall is usually a satellite, with a parent colony outdoors in a stump, a woodpile or a tree — kill one and the other refills it.

Frass, and what it means

The debris below an infested area is frass: coarse wood shavings, often with insect fragments and bits of insulation mixed through. It looks like sawdust and isn’t — sawdust from drilling is uniform, frass is fibrous and mixed. Finding it means the nest is inside the structure rather than outside it, because they push excavated material out of the gallery.

Look where water gets in. Window and door frames, sills, the wall behind a shower, roof valleys, anywhere a gutter overflows against the wall, deck ledger boards, and the bottom plate of a wall on a slab. Sound wood is hard work for them. Wood that has been wet is not.

Parent colonies and satellites

This is the part that decides whether treatment holds. A mature carpenter ant colony usually keeps a main nest — the parent, with the queen — in something substantial and damp outdoors: a stump, a dead section of a standing tree, a woodpile that hasn’t moved in years, buried scrap timber. Satellite nests then get established in nearby structures, holding workers and older larvae but no queen.

Treat the satellite in your wall and you have removed a branch. The parent keeps producing. This is why people report treating carpenter ants three years running and concluding the product doesn’t work.

A good technician spends real time outdoors on this job, following trails at dusk to work out where they lead. Trails run along edges — foundation lines, deck rails, branches touching the roof, utility lines. Trimming anything that bridges a tree to the house removes the highway.

Why sprays disappoint here

A contact spray kills the ants it hits, which are foragers — a small fraction of the colony, and the fraction the colony can afford to lose. Worse, some repellent products cause a stressed colony to bud into several new nests, which turns one problem into three.

Non-repellent products and baits work differently: the ants carry the active back and share it through the colony. It looks slower and it reaches the part that matters. If a quote leads with perimeter spraying and doesn’t mention baiting or locating the nest, it is treating the symptom you can see.
