The short version

Push a screwdriver into the lawn the day after watering. If it slides in easily to six inches, you don’t have compaction and aeration will do very little. If you have to lean on it, you do. Do that test before booking, and if you do book, insist on cores pulled rather than spikes — spike aeration compacts the soil it displaces rather than relieving it.

Do you actually need it?

Aeration relieves compaction and breaks thatch. Both are real, neither is universal, and it gets sold annually to lawns with neither.

Aeration relieves compaction and breaks through thatch. Both are real problems and neither is universal, yet aeration gets sold annually to lawns with neither.

The screwdriver test: water thoroughly, wait a day, then push a long screwdriver into the turf in several places. Sliding in to six inches with hand pressure means the soil is open and aeration will change little. Having to lean on it, or stopping short at two or three inches, means compaction.

For thatch, cut a small wedge out with a spade and look at the layer of brown fibrous material between green growth and soil. A thin layer is healthy. More than about half an inch starts holding water at the surface and keeping roots shallow.

Compaction comes from traffic, mowing the same lines with a heavy machine, clay soil, and construction. A lawn on sandy soil with light use may never need it.

Cores, not spikes

This matters and it’s the thing to put in writing. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out and leaves holes, genuinely reducing density. Spike aeration pushes a solid tine in, which displaces soil sideways and compresses it around the hole — adding compaction where you were paying to remove it.

Spike machines are cheaper to run and faster, so they get used. Ask specifically, and look at the lawn afterwards: cores leave visible plugs lying on the surface. No plugs means no cores.

Leave the plugs where they fall. They look untidy for a week or two and then break down, returning soil and microbial life to the surface. Raking them up removes half the benefit.

Timing, and pairing it with seed

Cool-season grasses want early autumn: soil still warm, air cooling, and enough growing season left to recover before dormancy. Spring is second-best and comes with a complication — opening the surface creates ideal conditions for crabgrass germination, and pre-emergent applied earlier gets disrupted by the coring.

Aeration and overseeding go together well, because the holes give seed direct soil contact, which is the main thing seed needs. If you’re going to do both, do them the same day, seed immediately after coring, and keep the surface consistently damp until germination.

Renting against hiring

An honest comparison. A core aerator is heavy, hard to load, needs a trailer or a truck, and is genuinely unpleasant to operate for an hour. Rental plus transport plus your Saturday tends to land close to what a service charges, and the service does it properly in a fraction of the time.

This is the one job in the lawn section where the argument for hiring is about the equipment rather than the skill.

When to stop and call someone

Irrigation and utility lines. Core tines go several inches down and will cut through shallow irrigation pipe, low-voltage lighting cable and invisible fence wire. Mark them first, or make it the contractor’s stated responsibility — and if you don’t know where they run, that’s a reason to have someone who does.

A lawn under drought stress or heat dormancy. Aerating stressed turf adds injury to something already struggling. Wait for growing conditions.

Newly seeded or newly sodded lawns. Give the root system a full season before opening it up.
