Straight answer
Ask whether the programme is built on a soil test or applied on a fixed route calendar. Those are different products at similar prices. Without a soil test nobody knows your phosphorus, potassium or pH, so the applications are a reasonable average rather than a plan — and pH in particular can lock up nutrients you’re paying to apply.

The one question

The other applies the same five-step schedule to every lawn on the route because that’s what’s on the truck.
The second isn’t fraud — a standard schedule on an average lawn produces a reasonable result. But it can’t correct what it hasn’t measured, and if your pH is off it may be applying nutrients the soil can’t release.
Soil pH is the clearest example. Outside a workable range, nutrients present in the soil become chemically unavailable to the plant regardless of how much more you add. A lawn can test adequate for a nutrient and show deficiency because the pH is wrong. Lime or sulphur fixes it, costs relatively little, and no calendar-based programme will tell you that you need it.
What you’re actually paying for
Be honest about the comparison. Granular fertilizer for an average lawn across a full season costs a fraction of a programme for the same period. The difference buys application timing you’ll actually keep, equipment, someone else’s Saturday, and the professional-grade products that are harder to buy in small quantities.
That’s a real service. It’s just worth knowing that you’re mostly buying execution rather than access — most of what goes on a home lawn is available to you, and the rates are published.
Nitrogen totals, and why they matter
The number that determines a fertilization programme is total nitrogen per thousand square feet across the season, and how it’s split. Too little and the lawn thins. Too much, or badly timed, and you get flush growth that’s soft, disease-prone and needs mowing twice a week.
A cool-season lawn takes most of its nitrogen in autumn, when the plant puts energy into roots rather than top growth. Heavy spring nitrogen produces the fastest visible greening and the weakest plant, which is exactly why it sells.

Where the money genuinely goes further
If budget is finite, a soil test plus correcting pH plus a well-timed autumn feed will outperform a full programme applied without one. That’s not an argument against hiring — it’s the order to fix things in, whoever does the work.

Where the line actually is
Restricted-use products. Almost nothing a home lawn needs falls into that category. If a company says otherwise, ask which product and check the label yourself — it’s public.
Persistent problems a feeding programme won’t fix. Thin turf under a maple isn’t a nutrition problem, it’s shade and root competition. Standing water isn’t nutrition, it’s drainage. A programme applied over either will keep being applied over either.
Applying anything near water. Setbacks from streams, ponds and storm drains are regulated in many places, and phosphorus in particular is restricted in a number of states.
