Your descriptionWhat it does in rain
Spilling everywhere, the same spot every storm, or only in heavy rain. That one detail helps tell whether this is cleaning, pitch or capacity.
Step one
Look from the topInside the trough
Debris load, standing water, loose hangers, split seams, and the state of the fascia and soffit behind the gutter. None of that is visible from the ground.
Step two
The quoteBy the job
Clean, repair, re-hang, replace sections, or a full seamless run. Ask for it priced per run and per downspout so you can see what you’re paying for.
Step three
The workAnd the discharge
Gutters flushed or fitted, downspouts proved clear, and water put out away from the foundation rather than beside it.
Step four
Gutter work a gutter company can take on
Maintenance
Gutter cleaning
Troughs cleared, downspouts flushed and proved to run. Often twice a year, more under pines.
Fixes
Gutter repair
Re-hanging for fall, new hangers, sealed seams, patched end caps and loose outlets put back properly.
New runs
Gutter installation
Ask for sizing from roof area and pitch rather than copying what was there, with the downspout count to match.
Seamless
Seamless gutters
Rolled on site to the length of the run, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. Aluminum, steel or copper.
Covers
Gutter guards
Screens and covers that cut how often the trough needs clearing. Ask which type suits the debris you actually get.
Drainage
Downspouts and extensions
Extra outlets where the run is overloaded, plus extensions and buried lines that carry water clear of the wall.
Waiting makes it worse
A gutter that overflows is a hose pointed at your foundation. Water coming over the front edge lands in a line at the base of the wall, saturates the backfill, and can find its way into the basement or crawl space — which is how a gutter job turns into a wet-basement job. Water going over the back edge is worse, because it runs onto the fascia and into the soffit, and wet wood there rots, drops the hangers it holds, and takes the trim and sometimes the roof sheathing edge with it.
Winter compounds it. A trough packed with wet debris freezes solid, holds meltwater against the eave and feeds ice dams that push water back under the shingles. Every season the gutter is left full, the damage moves from something you clean to something a carpenter has to replace.
Common questions
Cost
What drives the price?
Linear feet of run, how many stories, roof pitch and access, the number of downspouts, and the material if it’s a new install. Ask for the figure for your house before work starts.
Timing
How soon can someone come?
A clean is usually a short visit; repairs and new runs need measuring first. Describe it on the call and ask what’s open in your area.
Included
Are downspouts and debris included?
Ask for both in writing: downspouts flushed and proved clear, and the debris bagged and taken away rather than left in the beds.
What to ask
What should I ask on the call?
Ask what liability cover they carry for ladder and roof work, whether they send photos from the top, and whether the fascia gets checked before the quote.
