Tree & Shrub Services

Sold as one package covering everything woody on the property. What’s actually in it varies enormously, and the name tells you nothing about which trade is doing the work.

The short answer

Most tree and shrub programmes are seasonal spray and feed applications on ornamental shrubs and small trees. That’s a legitimate service, and it’s not the same as arboriculture — structural assessment of mature trees needs a qualified arborist and usually sits outside these contracts. Ask which trees are included by size, and what happens when something is diagnosed rather than treated on schedule.

Different trade

Arboriculture

Gardener maintaining shrubs
A tree-and-shrub program is seasonal — dormant pruning, growing-season shaping, and pest watch — timed to each plant rather than done all at once.

What’s actually in the programme

Four things sold under this name, and they’re not equivalent.

Common

Seasonal spray and feed

Dormant oil, insecticide and fungicide applications on a calendar, plus fertilisation. Aimed at ornamental shrubs and small ornamental trees rather than mature specimens.

Better

Monitored programme

Inspection at each visit, treatment when something is found. Costs similarly and does considerably more, because it responds to the property rather than the calendar.

Different trade

Arboriculture

Structural assessment, pruning, cabling and removal of mature trees. Needs different qualifications and insurance, and it isn’t usually in a tree and shrub package despite the name.

Also different

Hedge and shrub trimming

Shaping and cutting rather than treating. A maintenance job rather than a plant health one, and usually priced separately.

The gap that catches people out

A property has a tree and shrub programme, a mature oak develops a structural defect, and the homeowner assumes it’s covered. It isn’t — the programme covers plant health on ornamentals, and structural assessment of a large tree is a different qualification entirely.

Ask directly which trees are included and above what size they’re excluded. The answer is usually a diameter or a height threshold, and it’s worth knowing before you need it.

Calendar against monitoring

The question that separates the two: “What happens if nothing is wrong at a scheduled visit?”

A monitored programme inspects and treats what it finds. A calendar programme applies the same sequence regardless. Both charge similarly. Only one is responding to your plants, and calendar spraying of healthy shrubs is applying product for no benefit.

Specifying it

Five questions, and the second is the one people don’t think to ask.

1

Ask which plants are included

By type and size. Ornamental shrubs and small trees is the usual scope, and mature specimens usually sit outside it.

2

Ask where the size cut-off is

A diameter or height above which trees aren’t covered. This is the gap that surprises people.

3

Ask if it’s monitored or calendar

What happens at a visit where nothing is wrong. It distinguishes an approach from a route.

4

Ask what’s diagnosed against assumed

Whether treatments respond to identified problems or run on a schedule.

5

Ask about structural work

Whether they do it, subcontract it, or refer it out. All three are fine; not knowing isn’t.

What’s usually in and out

Item In a typical programme?
Ornamental shrub treatment Yes
Small ornamental tree treatment Yes
Fertilisation Often
Mature tree structural assessment No
Pruning and shaping Usually separate
Removal No
Hedge trimming Usually separate

Where this stops being a DIY job

Any structural concern on a mature tree. Cavities, fungal brackets, cracks, fresh lean. That’s an arborist rather than a plant health programme, and the distinction matters.

Anything above ladder height. Whether it’s treatment or pruning.

Anything near overhead lines. The utility, and it comes first regardless of who else is on site.

What a good programme does

Inspects

Looks before treating

At every visit. Calendar spraying healthy shrubs is applying product for no benefit.

Scopes

States the size limit

Which trees are in, and above what size they’re out.

Refers

Says when it’s an arborist job

Rather than treating a structural problem as a health one.

Common questions

What does a tree and shrub programme cover?

Usually seasonal treatment and feeding of ornamental shrubs and small trees. Structural assessment of mature trees is a different qualification and usually sits outside it.

Does it include mature trees?

Generally not above a certain size. Ask where the cut-off is by diameter or height — that gap is what surprises people when a large tree develops a problem.

Is pruning included?

Usually not. Plant health treatment and pruning are separate services, and hedge trimming is separate again.

How do I know if the programme is worth it?

Ask what happens at a visit where nothing is wrong. A monitored programme inspects and treats what it finds; a calendar programme applies the same sequence regardless.

Mature trees, or a structural concern?

Asking which plants are covered and where the size cut-off sits takes one phone call and it closes the gap that catches most people out. Structural work on mature trees is a different trade and worth knowing that before you need it.
