What Gutter Installation Costs
There is no honest national average, and the sites publishing one are guessing. What can be established is your linear footage, how many downspouts that requires, and how far roofing labour where you live sits from the national median.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Gutter is priced per linear foot plus a figure per downspout, so the whole quote turns on two measurements taken before anyone talks about money. Most homeowners under-measure the run, because gutter follows the roof edge rather than the walls, and most quotes come in light on downspouts. Establish both numbers yourself and the three quotes you collect become comparable for the first time.

Where your labour rate sits
Roofing is the trade that installs residential gutter, and its wage varies more by geography than most homeowners expect. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the national median for roofers at $26.65 an hour in May 2025. Across states the spread runs from about $21 to about $37 — a factor of 1.8, before anyone has quoted a foot of aluminium.
That will not tell you your price. It does tell you which direction to expect a quote to sit relative to a national figure you read somewhere, and it is the reason a number published for the whole country is close to meaningless.
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, occupation 47-2181 Roofers, state median hourly wage against the national median of $26.65. Wage is not price — a crew carries equipment, insurance, overhead and margin on top.
The three quotes you will get
Same house, different numbers, and usually because they measured different roofs.
COMPARE THIS
States the measurement
Linear feet, downspout count, gutter size and gauge, as separate figures. The only quote you can hold against another.
ASK AGAIN
One price, no spec
Might include tear-off and disposal, might not. Might be four downspouts, might be two. Ask before comparing it to anything.
BE CAREFUL
Cheap, and light on downspouts
The commonest way to be low. It looks like a saving until the corners overflow, and by then the gutter gets blamed for a spec problem.
What moves the number
BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING
Agree a rate for fascia repair up front. Not whether it might be needed — a price per foot of board, written down, before the old gutter comes off. This is the single most common way a gutter job ends in an argument.
Do not let anyone talk you down on downspouts to hit a number. It is the cheapest line on the quote and the one that decides whether the system works in heavy rain.
Second-storey work is not a ladder-and-optimism job. Falls from height are the trade’s main injury, and a firm that will not say how they intend to reach your eaves is telling you something.
Common questions
How much does gutter installation cost?
It is priced per linear foot plus a figure per downspout, so it depends entirely on your roof edge length and how many outlets that requires. National averages are close to meaningless when roofing labour alone varies 1.8 times between states.
How many downspouts do I need?
The working rule is one for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter run, with an extra one wherever a valley concentrates flow into a short length. Undersized downspouts are the usual reason a new gutter still overflows.
Why is gutter replacement more than installation?
Tear-off and disposal, and the fascia behind. Board that has sat behind a leaking gutter is often soft, hangers will not hold in it, and nobody can see that until the old system is off.
Is seamless gutter worth the extra?
Seamless removes the joints along straight runs, which is where sectional gutter usually starts leaking. It does not remove corners — those are still mitred and sealed on site, so ask how that is done.
Can I install gutter myself?
On a single storey, yes — sectional aluminium and a weekend. Two storeys is a different question, and the honest reason to hire is the height rather than the skill.
Got three quotes that do not match?
Ask each of them what roof area they measured and how many downspouts that gives. If the answers differ, they have not priced the same job, and the figure at the bottom of the page cannot be compared until that is settled.
