Box Elder Bug Control
They don’t bite, don’t breed indoors and don’t damage anything. What they do is arrive in large numbers on a warm autumn wall and then find their way into the house through gaps that were open all year.

The short answer
By the time they’re massing on your siding in autumn, exclusion is too late — many are already in the wall. The window that works is late summer, before the first cool nights, when you seal the gaps they would have used. Doing it in October traps them inside instead, where they overwinter in the void and trickle into rooms all winter.

Is it actually box elder bugs?
Three insects behave almost identically in autumn and get confused constantly.
Likely
Box elder bugs
Black with distinct red or orange lines on the back and along the wing edges. Congregate on warm sunny walls in autumn, usually the south or west face.
Similar
Cluster flies
Slow, sluggish flies doing the same thing on the same walls at the same time. Different insect, same exclusion approach.

Asian lady beetles
Look like ladybirds, mass on walls in autumn, and these do stain surfaces when disturbed. Same seal-in-summer answer.

Stink bugs
Shield-shaped and brown-grey. Same seasonal behaviour, and the same reason not to squash them indoors.
Why autumn sealing backfires
Box elder bugs move to sheltered spots as nights cool, and a wall void is ideal. They’re not entering the house to live in it — they’re entering the structure to overwinter, and the ones that appear in your rooms in January are the ones that got the direction wrong on the way out.
Seal in October and you’ve enclosed a population inside the void with no way back out. They spend the winter working inward instead, which is worse than leaving the gap alone would have been. Seal in August and there was never a population to enclose.
Why not to squash them
Crushed box elder bugs stain light-coloured surfaces and give off an unpleasant smell. So do stink bugs and lady beetles. Vacuum them instead — and empty the vacuum outside immediately, because the smell persists in the bag.
Doing it in the right order
The timing is the entire method.
Seal in late summer
Before the first cool nights. Utility penetrations, window and door frames, siding gaps, soffit joins, vents.
Prioritise the sunny walls
South and west faces, where they congregate. That’s where the entries that matter are.
Screen the vents
Fine mesh behind soffit and gable vents, which keeps ventilation and stops entry.
Vacuum, don’t squash
Indoors, all winter as they appear. Empty outside immediately — the smell persists in the bag.
Consider the host tree
They feed on box elder and some maples. Removing a female box elder near the house reduces the local population substantially — a real decision, not a small one.
Skip the indoor spraying
They’re not breeding inside. Killing the ones in a room does nothing about the hundreds in the void.
Timing decides the outcome
Where this stops being a DIY job
Large numbers already established in a wall or attic void. Sealing at that point makes it worse, and reaching them means opening something up.
Any sealing work above single storey. Most of the entries that matter are at soffit and gable height, which is ladder work with both hands occupied.
Removing a mature host tree. That’s a tree job with its own considerations, and it’s a permanent decision for a seasonal nuisance.
