Scorpion Control

Scorpions fluoresce under ultraviolet light. That single fact gives a homeowner a survey tool a pest company rarely mentions, because it lets you see the scale of the problem before anybody quotes on it.

Straight answer

Walk the property after dark with a UV torch and scorpions light up pale green against the ground. Do that before you buy anything: it tells you whether you have one that wandered in or a resident population, and those need completely different responses. Exclusion matters more than spraying, because they get through gaps far smaller than they look capable of.

What they need

Insects, water, tight harbourage

One wanderer or a resident population?

A UV torch after dark answers this before anyone quotes on it, and the answer changes what’s worth paying for.

Exclusion only

Nothing outside

One indoors, nothing on a night survey. Something wandered in. Door sweeps and penetrations are the whole answer and treatment adds little.

Worth acting

A handful along the wall

Some at the foundation or block wall. Exclusion plus harbourage clearing, and targeted treatment into cracks and voids rather than a broadcast barrier.

Get it surveyed

Twenty or more

A resident population with a food supply and shelter. Worth a full envelope survey rather than guessing, particularly with young children in the house.

Survey before you spend

A UV torch costs very little and scorpions glow under it, which makes a night walk the most informative thing you can do. Check the foundation line, under the edges of pavers and rocks, block walls, the base of trees, woodpiles, and around irrigation. Do it a couple of hours after dark when they’re active.

What you’re establishing is scale. One scorpion inside, and nothing outside, means something wandered in and exclusion is the whole answer. Twenty along the block wall means a resident population with a food supply, and that changes what’s worth paying for.

Exclusion does most of the work

Scorpions flatten. They get under a door with a worn sweep, through the gap where a pipe enters, through torn window screen, through weep holes, and into a garage under the door seal. Sealing is unglamorous and it is the part that actually keeps them out of the house.

Start with door sweeps and thresholds, then utility penetrations, then screens, then the garage. Outside, the goal is removing harbourage: keep firewood off the ground and away from the wall, lift and clear the underside of decorative rock where you can, cut back plants touching the house, and fix anything dripping. They need water more than most desert insects.

Why spraying alone underperforms

Two reasons worth knowing before you buy a barrier treatment. Scorpions have a tough cuticle and hold their bodies clear of surfaces on long legs, so they pick up far less residue crossing a treated band than a crawling insect does — the same physical problem that makes spiders hard to treat this way. And they eat insects, so the durable lever is the insect population, which brings you back to lighting and harbourage.

Treatment does have a place, particularly targeted into cracks, block wall voids and around entry points rather than broadcast across a yard. Ask which one you’re buying.

The night survey

A cheap blacklight is the most informative ten dollars in this whole category.

1

Go out a couple of hours after dark

When they’re active. Earlier and you’ll under-count badly.

2

Walk the foundation line

Then block walls, the base of trees, under paver edges, woodpiles, around irrigation. They fluoresce pale green against the ground.

3

Count, and note where

Scale tells you what to buy. Location tells you which harbourage to clear first.

4

Fit door sweeps

They flatten. A worn sweep is the single most common indoor route, ahead of every other gap.

5

Seal penetrations and screens

Where pipes and cables enter, weep holes, torn screen, the garage door seal.

6

Clear the harbourage

Firewood off the ground and away from the wall, decorative rock lifted where you can, plants cut back off the house, drips fixed.

What actually reduces them

Action Effect Worth doing?
UV survey after dark Tells you the scale before you spend Yes — first thing
Door sweeps and thresholds Closes the main indoor route Yes
Sealing utility penetrations Closes the second route Yes
Clearing rock, wood and clutter Removes daytime harbourage Yes
Fixing drips and leaks Removes the water Yes
Broadcast yard spraying Limited — poor surface contact Low value
Targeted crack and void treatment Reaches where they shelter Reasonable

Where this stops being yours

If anyone is stung and has symptoms beyond local pain — particularly a child, or anyone with difficulty breathing, muscle spasms or unusual agitation — that is a medical call, immediately. Contact emergency services or a poison control centre. Not a pest company. Regional species differ and this is not a judgement to make at home.

A resident population showing up on a UV survey in numbers, with young children in the house. Exclusion is still the answer, but a full survey of the building envelope is worth paying for rather than guessing at.

Block wall voids and roof spaces. Both are common harbourage and both are awkward and unpleasant to treat yourself.

What to expect from a decent survey

Arrival

Brings a blacklight

Walks the perimeter with you. If they start spraying on arrival, they decided before looking.

Treatment

Targets cracks and voids

Targeted into block wall voids and entry points, not broadcast across a yard.

Quote

Prices the sealing

Door sweeps and penetrations do more than any barrier.

What to ask first

  • Will you do a UV survey, and can I see what you find?
  • Is exclusion part of the quote, or treatment only?
  • Targeted crack and void work, or a broadcast barrier?
  • What are you recommending I change outside?

A company that shows up with a blacklight and walks the perimeter with you is diagnosing. One that starts spraying on arrival has decided before looking.

Questions people ask

Do scorpions really glow under UV light?

Yes. A cheap blacklight makes them fluoresce pale green after dark, which lets you survey the property and see the scale of the problem before anyone quotes on it.

How do scorpions get into a house?

They flatten. Under a worn door sweep, through utility penetrations, torn screens, weep holes and the garage door seal. Sealing is what keeps them out.

Does spraying for scorpions work?

Poorly on its own. They hold their bodies clear of treated surfaces on long legs, so residue transfer is low — and they eat insects, so the durable lever is the insect population.

What attracts scorpions to a yard?

Insects, water and tight harbourage. Firewood against a wall, decorative rock, dense planting at the foundation and anything dripping.

A resident population rather than a wanderer?

The torch survey, the door sweeps and the clearing are genuinely yours and they do most of the work. A full envelope survey with block wall voids and roof space included is the part worth handing over — particularly if the survey turned up numbers rather than one.
