The short answer

Trees lean for all sorts of reasons: growing toward light, wind loading over decades, a slope. Most have leaned the same way for years and have grown reaction wood to compensate. What changes the picture is new movement — soil lifting or cracking on the side opposite the lean, roots newly visible, a gap opening between trunk and ground. That means the root plate is failing.

A tree that leaned for years is usually fine; a tree that leaned suddenly, with fresh soil heaving at the base, is a same-day hazard.

Old lean or new movement?

Four things to look at, all at ground level.

Usually fine

Straight lean, no base disturbance

Soil intact around the trunk, no cracking, no exposed roots. Often with a curve where the tree has grown to compensate. Stable, and has been for years.

Urgent

Soil lifting opposite the lean

A mound or crack on the high side, or a gap opening at the trunk base. The root plate is rotating. This is the sign that matters.

Roots newly exposed

Roots visible that weren’t before, especially away from the lean. Same failure mode.

Assess

Lean plus decay

A cavity, fungal brackets at the base, or soft wood. Lean matters much more on a tree whose structure is compromised.

Why the crown tells you less than the base

People assess a leaning tree by looking up. The information is at the bottom. A tree fails at the root plate or at a structural defect in the trunk — the angle of the crown is a symptom of history rather than a predictor of failure.

Walk around the base after any significant storm. You’re looking for changes: cracking in the soil, a raised lip on one side, a gap where trunk meets ground. Those appear before failure and they’re visible to anyone who looks.

Why straightening rarely works

Cabling a mature leaning tree upright is generally not viable. It has grown to its current geometry, the root plate developed around it, and forcing it back introduces stresses it isn’t adapted to. On a young tree, staking and gradual correction can work. On a mature one the options are monitoring, weight reduction, or removal.

All ground-level observation, and it tells you whether to worry.

Walk the base and look down

Soil cracking, a raised lip opposite the lean, a gap at the trunk. This is the assessment that matters.

Check for decay at the collar

Fungal brackets, soft or hollow-sounding wood, cavities. Lean on a decayed tree is a different risk.

Photograph and date it

From a fixed position. Comparing photographs months apart is the only reliable way to detect slow movement.

Note what’s beneath

A lean away from everything is a different problem from a lean over a house or a play area.

Re-check after storms

That’s when root plates move. A base intact in autumn may not be in February.

Where this stops being a DIY job

Fresh soil movement at the base. A rotating root plate can fail without further warning. Keep people out from under it and get it looked at now rather than scheduled.

Any lean over a house, road or play area. The consequence changes the calculation even where the tree looks stable.

Anything within reach of a power line. That’s your electricity utility, and it comes before any tree service.

Is a leaning tree dangerous?

Not necessarily. Most have leaned for years and grown to compensate. What matters is new movement — soil lifting or cracking on the side opposite the lean.

Can a leaning tree be straightened?

Rarely, on a mature tree. The root plate has developed around the current geometry. Young trees can sometimes be corrected with staking.

How do I know if a lean is getting worse?

Photograph it from a fixed position and compare over months. Slow movement is hard to judge by eye and obvious in two photographs.

Walking the base, checking for soil cracking and photographing from a fixed spot is a five-minute job that answers the actual question. Fresh root-plate movement, or any lean over something that matters, is where an opinion is worth having.
