Prodiamine 65 WDG

Quali-Pro Prodiamine 65 WDG is a generic Barricade: a sprayable pre-emergent that stops crabgrass, Poa annua and other weed seeds from establishing. It’s one of the most cost-efficient pre-emergents you can buy and lasts longer in the soil than dithiopyr, which makes it a strong choice for an early spring application on cool-season lawns.

01

What it’s for

Prodiamine works before weeds show up. It forms a barrier in the top of the soil that stops germinating crabgrass, annual bluegrass, chickweed and other listed weeds from rooting. It won’t kill anything already growing, so timing is the whole game.

We cover it in our crabgrass preventer roundup as the budget-friendly option for cool-season grass. Compared with dithiopyr (Dimension), prodiamine holds up longer in the soil but breaks down in sunlight, while dithiopyr breaks down faster with water and heat. Our prodiamine vs dithiopyr guide walks through which to pick.

02

How to use it

Apply in early spring when soil temperatures reach about 50°F, before crabgrass germinates. The label’s general rate is 0.4 oz of product in half a gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft, and the right rate shifts with the weed and grass type. Use our prodiamine calculator for exact amounts.

Mix the granules fully in water before spraying. It works best when it gets up to half an inch of rain or irrigation within two weeks of application. Depending on rate and conditions, the label puts residual control at 3 to 8 months.

Watch out for

It also stops grass seed, so don’t apply where you plan to seed this season; check the label interval. Use caution on bentgrass, don’t use it on turf in poor condition, and keep it off driveways and patios because it can stain concrete and asphalt.
