Rat Removal
The order matters more than the method. Almost every rat job that goes badly went badly because control came before exclusion, or exclusion came before anyone looked at why the property was attractive in the first place.

Harbourage first, exclusion second, control third. Reverse those and you get the two classic outcomes: bait put down before the building is sealed produces dead rats inside wall voids, and a building sealed before the interior population is dealt with traps them inside with you. The claim that poisoned rodents leave the building looking for water is a marketing line, not a behaviour.

Why they’re here at all
Rats live alongside people because people supply food, water and cover. A property with a problem is usually supplying at least two.

A gap you could post a quarter through. Utility penetrations, under the garage door, deck-to-foundation junctions, soffits — they climb, so roof height matters.
Step one: why they are here at all
Rats are commensal — they live alongside people because people generate food, water and cover. A property with a rat problem is almost always supplying at least two of the three, and the supply is usually mundane: a bird feeder spilling seed, a compost bin taking cooked scraps, pet food left out, fallen fruit nobody clears, an overflowing bin, dense ivy against a wall, a woodpile that has not moved in three years, a dripping outdoor tap.
This step gets skipped constantly because it is unglamorous and it is not what anyone is selling. It is also the only part of the job that stops the problem recurring, because everything downstream of it is population management on a property that will keep attracting a new population.
Step two: exclusion, before anything is killed
The rule of thumb in the field is that a rat gets through a gap you could post a quarter through, and a mouse through one that takes a dime. Both will enlarge an existing gap; neither needs to start from nothing. Rats gnaw, and their incisors handle soft mortar, expanding foam, plastic and aluminium without difficulty.
Which means the material matters. Steel wool on its own fails — they pull it out in strands. Copper mesh or stainless wool packed tight and then sealed over with mortar or a rodent-rated sealant holds. Hardware cloth, cut oversize and fixed properly, holds. Expanding foam alone does not hold and never has; it is a draught seal, not a rodent barrier.
The places to look are the boring ones: where a utility line, pipe or cable enters the building; under the bottom edge of a garage door; the gap where a deck meets the foundation; soffit and roofline junctions, since rats climb well and roof access is common; and any vent without intact mesh.
Step three: control, and the bait problem
For a known population inside a structure, snap traps placed against walls along the runs outperform bait for one blunt reason: you recover the body. With bait you do not, and the animal dies wherever it happens to be, which on a cold night is somewhere warm — a wall void, under insulation, above a ceiling. The resulting smell runs for weeks and the only fix is opening the wall.
You will see the claim that anticoagulant baits make rodents thirsty and send them outdoors to die. Treat it as marketing. It is not a behaviour you can rely on and it is not a reason to skip exclusion.
The second bait problem is that it does not stop with the rat. Anticoagulant rodenticides stay active in the body of the animal that ate them, and a poisoned, slow rat is exactly the easy target a hawk, an owl, a fox or a neighbour’s cat is looking for. That is how the dose moves up the food chain. It is a genuine reason to prefer traps in a residential yard, and it is a reason the good operators will raise before you do.
The order this has to happen in
Reverse any two of these and you get dead rats in a wall, or live ones sealed in with you.
Remove food and water
Feeders, compost, pet food, fallen fruit, the dripping tap. Unglamorous, nobody sells it, and it’s the only part that lasts.
Clear the harbourage
Woodpile off the ground and away from the wall, ivy cut back, buried timber out.
Survey the envelope
Ground level first, then roofline — they climb well and soffit entries are common and easy to miss.
Seal with the right material
Copper mesh or stainless wool packed tight and sealed over, or hardware cloth cut oversize. Steel wool alone gets pulled out. Foam is a draught seal, not a barrier.
Then trap, not bait
Snap traps against walls on the runs. You recover the body — with bait you don’t, and it dies somewhere warm, which is usually inside a wall.

Both for welfare and because a trap left unchecked stops being a control method and becomes a smell.
Doing it yourself against hiring it out
Where doing it yourself stops working
Droppings, scratching or movement inside a wall, ceiling or floor void. Do not seal the building while that population is inside it. Sealing first traps them in, and what follows is the animals dying in the cavity, or chewing their way somewhere worse. The interior population has to be dealt with before the envelope is closed — the same order-of-operations rule that applies to a wasp colony in a wall.
Clean-up in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space. Dried rodent droppings and nesting material should not be dry-swept or vacuumed in a confined area, because that puts the dust in the air you are breathing. This is a genuine respiratory hazard with an established protocol, and it is the part of the job most worth handing over.
Roofline entry points. Rats climb, so a lot of the real entries are at soffit and fascia height. Ladder work plus one hand occupied is where the injuries in this job come from.
