Mosquito Control
The species that bite you in your own garden mostly breed in containers and don’t travel far from where they hatched. Which is unusually good news: the water producing them is close enough to find.
The short answer
Barrier sprays kill adults for a couple of weeks and do nothing to the water producing the next generation. Source reduction is unglamorous, free, and the only part that compounds. Find the water first — it is almost never a pond, and almost always something you don’t think of as holding water.
What they need
Standing water, a week or so
Typical flight range
Short for container breeders
Barrier spray
Adults only, weeks not months
Bti
Treats water you can’t drain
Where the water actually is
People look at ponds. The productive sites are smaller, closer, and mostly things you don’t think of as holding water.
Most missed
Corrugated extensions
A ridged downspout extension holds water in every single ridge. So does a fold in a tarp or pool cover, and the tray under an air conditioner.
Obvious once seen
Containers
Plant saucers, buckets, toys, wheelbarrows, tyres, offcuts behind the shed. Anything left out after rain and holding for about a week.
Structural
Gutters and drains
A blocked gutter is a breeding site running the length of the house. So is a drain that holds, and a tree hole.
Can’t drain
Deliberate water
Rain barrels, ponds, a low spot that stays wet. These get larvicide or movement rather than removal.
Where the water actually is
People look at ponds and ditches. The productive sites are smaller and closer, and most hold water for the week or so a mosquito needs to go from egg to adult.
Corrugated downspout extensions, which hold water in every ridge. Blocked gutters. Plant saucers. A fold in a tarp or a pool cover. Children’s toys. Wheelbarrows. Buckets. Tyres. Bird baths that aren’t emptied. Tree holes. Corrugated roofing offcuts behind the shed. The tray under an air conditioner. Anything left out after rain.
Walk the property the day after heavy rain, which is when everything holding water is obvious. Tip, drain or remove what you find. Then check again a week later, because the ones you missed are the ones producing.
What to do about water you can’t remove
Some water is meant to be there — a rain barrel, a pond, a low spot that stays wet, a drain that holds. Bacterial larvicide handles those. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, sold in dunk or granule form, targets mosquito larvae specifically and is used in water that fish, birds and pets have access to. It is one of the more genuinely selective tools in this field and it goes in the water rather than into the air.
Screen rain barrels. Keep a bird bath fresh rather than topped up. Move water in a pond — mosquitoes need it still, so a pump or fountain removes the site without removing the pond.
Where a service earns its money
Barrier treatment applied to the undersides of foliage, dense shrubs and shaded resting areas does reduce biting adults, and it lasts a few weeks rather than a season. It is a real effect and a real cost, repeated.
The version worth buying combines it with source work — someone who walks the property, finds the water, treats what can’t be drained, and then applies a barrier. The version that isn’t is a spray truck on a schedule while a blocked gutter twenty feet away produces the next generation.
Ask which one you’re getting. It is the same question as with ticks: habitat, barrier, or both.
Source reduction, step by step
Free, unglamorous, and the only part that compounds. Do it the day after heavy rain when everything holding water is obvious.
Walk it after rain
Everything holding water shows itself. Take a bucket and tip as you go.
Clear the gutters
Then check the downspout extensions specifically — corrugated ones hold water in every ridge even when the gutter is clean.
Screen the rain barrel
Fine mesh over the opening. Keeps it useful and stops it producing.
Move the pond water
Mosquitoes need it still. A pump or small fountain removes the breeding site without removing the pond.
Larvicide what stays
Bti in dunk or granule form for water you can’t drain. Targets mosquito larvae specifically and is used in water fish and pets access.
Walk it again a week later
The sites you missed are the ones producing. This second pass is what separates a fix from a gesture.
What each approach actually does
When to stop and call someone
If the source is on a neighbouring property. Container breeders don’t travel far, so persistent biting with a clean yard usually means the water is next door — an unmaintained pool, a blocked gutter, stored containers. That is a conversation rather than a treatment, and in the case of an abandoned pool many local health departments will act on a report.
Standing water you can’t safely reach or identify — a flat roof, a crawl space, a blocked underground drain. Worth having someone look rather than guessing.
If anyone develops fever, headache or unusual illness after heavy exposure, that is a medical question and mosquito-borne illness varies by region. See a doctor rather than a pest company.
What a mosquito programme should include
Survey
Walks the property for water
A technician who surveys is doing the job. One who starts spraying is selling the repeatable half.
Larvicide
Treats what can’t be drained
Rain barrels, ponds, blocked drains. Bti goes in the water, not the air.
Barrier
Targets resting sites
Undersides of foliage and shaded cover, not open lawn.
What to ask on the call
- Will you survey for breeding sites, or treat only?
- What did you find, and where?
- Do you use larvicide in water that can’t be drained?
- How long does the barrier treatment last, and how many visits a season?
- What should I change so this needs less treatment next year?
A technician who walks your property looking for water is doing the job. One who arrives and starts spraying foliage is selling the part that has to be repeated.
Common questions
Where do mosquitoes breed in a yard?
Small containers, not ponds. Corrugated downspout extensions, tarp folds, plant saucers, blocked gutters, toys, tyres, bird baths. Anything holding water for about a week.
How long does mosquito barrier spray last?
A few weeks, and it acts on adults only. It does nothing to the water producing the next generation, which is why it has to be repeated.
Is Bti safe for pets and fish?
Bacterial larvicide targets mosquito larvae specifically and is routinely used in water that fish, birds and pets have access to. It’s one of the more selective tools available.
Why am I still getting bitten after treatment?
Container breeders don’t travel far, so a treated yard with persistent biting usually means the source is next door — an unmaintained pool, a blocked gutter, stored containers.
Yard’s clean and they’re still biting?
Tipping out containers, clearing the gutter and putting Bti in the rain barrel is free and it is the half that lasts. If you’ve done all of that and it hasn’t changed, the source is somewhere you can’t see or isn’t yours — and that’s worth having someone find.
