The short answer
Gutter capacity is calculated from roof area, roof pitch and local rainfall intensity — not chosen by eye. An undersized system, or one with too few downspouts, overflows in every heavy storm no matter how clean it is. Ask any installer what roof area they measured and how many downspouts that gives. If the answer is vague, the system is being guessed at.

Seamless or sectional?
The real difference is joints, and joints are where gutters fail.
Usually better
Seamless
Rolled on site from a coil to the exact length of each run. Joints only at corners and outlets, which is where nearly all leaks start. Costs more and needs a company with the machine.

Sectional
Pre-cut lengths joined every few feet. Cheaper, DIY-able, and every joint is a future leak. Reasonable on short runs and outbuildings, weaker on a long frontage.

The default. Light, doesn’t rust, dents easily, comes in colours. Fine for almost every house.

Copper or steel
Copper for looks and longevity at several times the price. Steel is stronger than aluminium and will rust where the coating fails.
The numbers worth knowing before anyone quotes
Pitch. Gutters aren’t level. They fall toward the outlet at roughly a quarter-inch per ten feet — enough to move water, little enough to be invisible. Too flat and the channel holds standing water; too steep and it looks wrong and outruns the downspout.
Hanger spacing. Typically every two to three feet, closer where snow and ice load is a factor. Widely spaced hangers are the single most common cause of the sag that shows up two winters later.
Downspout count. This is where systems are most often undersized. Long runs need more than one, and a corner or a valley concentrating flow may need its own. One downspout on a forty-foot run of heavy roof is a system that will overflow.
Getting a quote you can compare
Five questions that separate a measured job from a guessed one.
Ask the roof area
They should have measured, or be able to estimate it credibly. Capacity follows from it, and an installer who hasn’t is sizing by habit.
Ask the downspout count and why
Number and placement, with a reason. “One at each end” without reference to the roof is a guess.
Ask about the fascia
Gutters hang from it. If it’s soft anywhere, that has to be repaired first and should be in the quote rather than discovered mid-job.
Confirm seamless or sectional
And where the joints will fall. On a long frontage this is most of the difference in how long the system lasts.
Ask about the discharge
Where water goes once it leaves the downspout. Extensions and distance from the foundation should be part of the design, not an afterthought.

Where this stops being a DIY job
The whole job, if it’s above single storey. Installation means working the full length of every run at height, holding lengths of metal level, drilling into fascia. It is a two-person job at minimum and a genuinely dangerous one alone.
Any sign of rot in the fascia. Gutters hang from that timber. Fixing new gutters to soft fascia means they come off it, usually in the first hard winter, sometimes taking the board with them.
If the existing system overflows and you don’t know why. Replacing like-for-like reproduces the problem. Size the new one from the roof, not from what was there.

Common questions
How much does gutter installation cost?
It moves on total run length, number of storeys, material, seamless versus sectional, and whether any fascia needs repair. Get the roof area and downspout count in the quote so you’re comparing the same system.
Is seamless gutter worth the extra?
On long runs, usually. Joints are where gutters leak, and seamless removes all of them except corners and outlets. On short runs and outbuildings the difference matters much less.
What pitch should gutters have?
Roughly a quarter-inch of fall per ten feet toward the outlet. Too flat holds standing water; too steep looks wrong and can outrun the downspout.
How many downspouts do I need?
It follows from roof area and rainfall, not from the length of the run. Under-provisioning downspouts is the most common cause of a clean system still overflowing.
Sizing a new system, or replacing one that never worked?
Choosing between seamless and sectional, and knowing what to ask about capacity, you can do from the ground. Working a full run at height with lengths of metal, and judging whether the fascia will hold, is where this becomes a two-person job with the right equipment.
