Quotes for the same infestation vary more than almost any other pest job, and it’s usually because they cover different amounts of work rather than different prices for the same work.

The short answer
The variable that separates two quotes most often is how many visits are included. Chemical treatment cannot work in a single visit because eggs are protected and hatch afterwards — so a single-visit chemical price isn’t cheaper, it’s incomplete. Heat can work in one, which is why it costs more per treatment and may cost less overall.

Several treatments a fortnight or so apart. Lower per visit, and the total depends entirely on how many are included. Ask for the number, not “as needed”.

One treatment, higher price, kills all life stages including eggs. No residual protection afterwards, so anything reintroduced starts fresh.

Single chemical visit
Sold as a complete treatment and it structurally cannot be. Eggs hatch after application, and nothing is scheduled to meet them.
The five variables
1. Method. Heat versus chemical, and they price completely differently.
2. Visits included. The single biggest difference between two chemical quotes.
3. Rooms affected. Priced by treated area rather than property size. One bedroom is a different job from a whole floor.
4. How established. Caught early is a fraction of the cost of a population that’s spread to adjoining rooms.
5. Preparation. Some companies include it, most require you to do it. It affects the result substantially either way, so find out which.
Why the cheapest quote often costs most
A single-visit chemical price looks like a saving until the second call-out. Because eggs hatch after treatment, the job either includes follow-ups or it will need them — and buying them individually at call-out rates costs more than a programme quoted properly at the start.

Who does the preparation?
Included or yours. It affects the result substantially, and it’s a lot of work if it’s yours.
How many rooms are being treated?
Adjoining rooms often need including even without visible activity, and that changes the price.

Where this stops being a DIY job
Don’t choose on price for this one. An incomplete treatment leaves a population that spreads to adjoining rooms, and the second attempt costs more than doing it properly first.
Flats and shared buildings. They move through service voids and shared walls, so treating one unit while neighbours go untreated is a loop. This needs handling at building level.
Anyone reacting badly to bites. Skin reactions and secondary infection are medical questions. See a doctor about the reaction; the pest treatment is separate.
