Cockroach Control

Which species you have decides everything, because one comes in from outside and the other arrives in your shopping and breeds indoors. Treating them the same way fails.

The short answer

German cockroaches are small, tan, and live entirely indoors — they arrive in boxes, bags and second-hand appliances and breed continuously in warm voids near food and water. American and oriental roaches are larger and come in from drains, sewers and outdoors. The critical difference: spraying repellent product at German roaches scatters them into new harbourage and makes the infestation harder to reach. Gel bait works because they carry it back.

What works

Gel bait

Cockroach on a hard surface
Daytime roach sightings mean a large population — they’re nocturnal, so what’s visible by day is the overflow of what’s hidden.

Which species?

Size and location tell you, and the answer changes the treatment completely.

Hardest

German

Small, tan, two dark stripes behind the head. Found in kitchens and bathrooms, in warm voids — behind appliances, under sinks, inside cabinetry. They don’t come from outside. They arrive with things and breed indoors, which is why they escalate.

Easier

American

Large, reddish-brown, often seen at night on floors. Comes in from drains, sewers and outdoors. Exclusion and drain work matter more than baiting.

Easier

Oriental

Dark, almost black, slower moving. Damp-loving — basements, drains, under sinks. Usually signals a moisture problem as much as a pest one.

Not roaches

Beetles or crickets

Frequently mistaken. Worth identifying properly, because the treatment for a roach does nothing for either.

Why spraying makes German roaches worse

Repellent insecticides do what the name says: insects avoid treated surfaces. Against a species living in the open that’s useful. Against German roaches living in voids it is actively harmful, because it pushes them out of known harbourage and into new places — deeper into cabinetry, into adjoining rooms, into neighbouring flats.

What you want instead is something they carry back. Gel bait is eaten and shared through the population, including with individuals that never leave the void. It looks slower for the first few days and reaches the part of the infestation you can’t see, which spraying never does.

If a company’s first move on German roaches is to spray skirting boards, they’ve chosen the approach that scatters them.

What actually helps

Preparation does more here than product, and it’s all yours.

1

Identify the species first

Small and striped means German and an indoor breeding population. Large and reddish means it came from outside.

2

Remove water

Roaches survive far longer without food than without water. Fix drips, dry sinks at night, empty pet bowls.

3

Deny the food

Sealed containers, crumbs cleared nightly, appliances pulled out and cleaned behind. Grease behind a cooker is a food source.

4

Cut the harbourage

Cardboard is ideal roach habitat — corrugations are warm, dark and edible. Get boxes out of kitchens and cupboards.

5

Use gel bait, not spray

Small placements in voids, hinges, behind kick boards. Never spray over bait — it contaminates it and they stop eating.

6

Expect a second round

Egg cases are protected. Something has to still be working when the next generation hatches.

Where this stops being a DIY job

German roaches in a flat or shared building. They move between units through service voids and shared walls, so treating one flat while neighbours are untreated is a cycle rather than a fix. This needs to be handled at building level, and that’s a conversation with the freeholder or managing agent.

Any infestation in a food business or childcare setting. That’s a licensing matter with its own timescales and documentation, not a domestic job.

If they’re coming from a drain. Damaged or open drainage needs finding and fixing — treating the kitchen repeatedly while the source is under the floor is money spent on symptoms.

Common questions

What’s the difference between German and American cockroaches?

German roaches are small, tan and live indoors permanently, arriving in boxes and appliances. American roaches are large, reddish-brown and come in from drains and outdoors.

Why did spraying make my roach problem worse?

Repellent sprays push German roaches out of known harbourage into new places — deeper into cabinetry or into adjoining rooms. Gel bait works instead because they carry it back.

How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?

Several weeks at least, because egg cases are protected from treatment. Anything still hatching after the first round needs something still active to meet it.

Do cockroaches mean a dirty house?

German roaches arrive with things — boxes, bags, second-hand appliances — and will establish in a spotless kitchen if there’s warmth and water. Cleanliness affects how fast they spread, not whether they arrive.

Small tan roaches, or coming from a drain?

Removing water, clearing cardboard and cleaning behind appliances does more against roaches than most products, and gel bait is available to anyone. A shared building, a drain source, or any food or childcare setting is where this needs someone else.
