The instruction people get wrong
For bed bugs: don’t move things out of the room. The instinct is to clear infested items to another room or the garage, and it spreads the infestation along the route and into the new space.
Anything that must leave gets sealed in plastic inside the affected room and stays sealed. Anything that can be hot-laundered goes straight into a bag, to the machine, and back into a clean bag.
Why the list has to come early
Laundering a household’s bedding and clothing is not a same-day job. Nor is emptying every kitchen cupboard. A company that sends the preparation list the night before has set you up to fail, and the treatment then underperforms for reasons that get attributed to the product.
Ask at the point of booking. A company that has a written list ready is a company that has done this properly before.

Any treatment where you weren’t given re-entry instructions. Ask before it happens, particularly with infants, pregnancy, respiratory conditions or pets.
Preparation you physically can’t do. Mobility, health or scale. Say so at booking — some companies offer it as a service and the alternative is a failed treatment.
Anything requiring you to leave for an extended period. Fumigation and heat treatment have specific requirements that need arranging in advance.
