Acclaim Extra is a grass-only post-emergent from Envu (formerly Bayer) built on fenoxaprop. It’s our pick for crabgrass that has already tillered, and it also handles goosegrass, foxtail and Japanese stiltgrass. It doesn’t touch broadleaf weeds, so it’s a specialist, not an all-rounder.

What it’s for
Acclaim Extra ranked second in our crabgrass killer tests as the best option for larger crabgrass. It targets annual grassy weeds only: smooth and hairy crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, barnyardgrass, panicum, sandbur and Japanese stiltgrass, among others on the label.
Because it ignores broadleaf weeds, it suits a lawn where grassy weeds are the main problem. If dandelions or clover are mixed in, you’ll need a separate broadleaf product, or a quinclorac product like Drive XLR8 that covers both.
How to use it
The rate depends on how far along the weeds are. Per the label, use 0.30 fl oz per gallon of water per 1,000 sq ft when crabgrass is at the 1–4 leaf stage, and 0.46 fl oz once it has 1–2 tillers. Our crabgrass guide lists rates up to 0.90 fl oz for older weeds; check the label for the stage you’re treating.
Spray on a calm day while weeds are young and growing. You can water 1–2 days before or one day after the application, and don’t mow for at least 24 hours afterward.
Fast-growing Kentucky bluegrass can stunt or yellow for a short time after spraying. Wait 2–3 months before using it on newly seeded bluegrass. It controls common bermudagrass, so don’t spray it on a bermuda lawn.
