Tree Removal

The price is set less by the tree than by what’s underneath it. A big tree with open ground around it is straightforward. A small one over a conservatory is not.

The short answer

A tree with clear ground around it can be felled in one piece — fast and comparatively cheap. A tree with a house, fence, drive or neighbour’s garden inside its fall radius has to be climbed and taken down in sections, roped down piece by piece. That’s several times the work and several times the price, and it’s decided entirely by the drop zone rather than the trunk.

Always ask

Sectional or straight fell?

Which kind of removal is this?

Ask which one you’re being quoted for. It’s the single biggest cost variable.

Cheapest

Straight fell

Open ground the full height of the tree in the direction of fall. One cut sequence, down in a piece, then processed on the ground. Fast.

Costly

Sectional dismantle

No safe drop zone, so a climber takes it down in pieces, roping each one clear. Hours instead of minutes, and it’s the honest reason a small tree can cost more than a large one.

Most costly

Crane-assisted

Sections lifted out over a structure. Used where even roped lowering isn’t safe. Adds machine hire and often a road closure.

Different job

Anything touching a line

Not a tree service question at all. The utility owns vegetation near its conductors and normally handles it without charge.

What a removal quote usually doesn’t include

The stump. Almost always priced separately, and it’s the most common surprise in this trade. “Tree removal” conventionally means the tree is taken down and cut up — you’re left with a stump at ground level.

The debris. Some quotes include hauling everything away, some leave logs stacked and chips on the lawn, some charge for removal as an extra line. All three are legitimate; find out which you’re getting.

The lawn. Heavy machinery on soft ground leaves ruts, and a felled trunk hitting the lawn leaves an impression. Reasonable companies mention it. Nobody repairs it for free.

Ask for felling, stump, and haul-away as three separate lines. A single number hides which of the three is inflated and makes two quotes impossible to compare.

Getting a quote worth comparing

Five questions, all answerable on the phone before anyone visits.

1

Straight fell or sectional?

The biggest cost driver by a distance. If they can’t say without seeing it, that’s a fair answer — but they should ask what’s around the tree.

2

Is the stump included?

Almost never. Get it quoted separately now rather than discovering it after the tree is down.

3

What happens to the wood?

Hauled, stacked, or chipped and left. Three different outcomes and three different prices.

4

Ask to see their insurance certificate

You’re entitled to ask, and the answer to being asked tells you something in itself.

5

Who’s responsible for damage?

To lawn, fence, drive, neighbouring property. Get it said out loud before work starts.

What drives the price

Factor Effect Why
Clear drop zone Much cheaper One cut sequence
Structures within fall radius Much dearer Climbed and roped down
Access for machinery Cheaper Chipper and truck close by
Dead or decayed tree Dearer Unpredictable, no safe climbing
Stump grinding Separate line Different machine
Haul-away Separate line Tipping fees

Where this stops being a DIY job

Any tree touching or overhanging a power line. Contact your electricity utility, not a tree service. They are responsible for vegetation around their conductors and normally deal with it at no cost. Contact with a live line is fatal and it does not require touching the wire — current arcs. Nothing on this page applies to that situation.

Any tree you’d have to climb. Chainsaw work off the ground is a trade with its own training and equipment. A ladder and a saw is the worst combination in home maintenance.

A dead or hollow tree. Decayed wood behaves unpredictably when cut — it can fail early, in an unintended direction, and it can’t be safely climbed. This is the category where experienced people get hurt.

Signs the quote is a plan rather than a number

Asks

What’s around the tree

Drop zone before diameter. Anyone quoting on height alone hasn’t worked out the method.

Itemises

Three separate lines

Felling, stump, haul-away. A single number can’t be compared against anything.

Says

What the lawn will look like

Ruts and impressions are normal. Mentioning them unprompted is a good sign.

Common questions

Why does a small tree cost more than a big one?

Because the drop zone sets the price. A large tree with open ground is felled in one piece in minutes. A small tree over a conservatory has to be climbed and lowered in sections, which takes hours.

Is stump removal included in tree removal?

Almost never. It’s a separate machine and a separate line. Get it quoted at the same time or you’ll be arranging it afterwards at a call-out price.

Who removes a tree near power lines?

Your electricity utility, not a tree service. They’re responsible for vegetation around their conductors and usually handle it without charge.

What’s left after a tree is removed?

A stump at ground level, and depending on the quote either a cleared site, stacked logs, or chips on the lawn. Confirm which before booking.

Close to the house, or one you’d have to climb?

Working out whether you need a straight fell or a sectional dismantle, and getting felling, stump and haul-away quoted as three lines, is something you can do before anyone visits. The tree itself is a trade with its own training, and dead or overhanging trees are where experienced people get hurt.
