Tree Planting

Most new trees that fail don’t die in the first season. They decline slowly over five or ten years, and the usual cause was set on the day they went in the ground.

The short answer

The root flare — where the trunk widens into the roots — has to be visible at soil level. Below the surface it stays wet, the bark rots, and the tree declines over years. It’s the single most common planting error, it’s frequently present in nursery stock before you buy, and it’s invisible once the hole is filled. Dig wide rather than deep, and check the flare before backfilling.

Staking

Usually unnecessary

Four errors that kill trees slowly

All four happen at planting, and none shows up for years.

Worst

Planted too deep

Flare buried. Bark stays wet, decays, and the tree declines over five to ten years. Frequently the nursery already potted it too deep — check before planting, not after.

Common

Hole too narrow

Roots hit compacted sides and circle rather than spreading. A hole two to three times the root ball’s width, at the same depth, is the specification.

Common

Mulch against the trunk

The volcano of mulch piled up the stem. Holds moisture against bark, invites decay and rodents. Mulch goes wide and shallow, and stops short of the trunk.

Overdone

Staked and left

Most trees establish better with some movement. Where staking is needed it should be low, loose, and removed after a season.

Check the flare before you dig

Container-grown stock is very often potted with the flare already several inches below the compost surface. If you plant it at the depth it arrived at, you’ve buried it further.

Before planting, scrape back the top of the root ball until the flare is visible — the point where the trunk stops being a straight column and widens out. That is the level that should sit at or just above the finished soil surface. Everything above it in the pot is compost that needs to come off.

This one check, done in two minutes, prevents the most common cause of premature decline in landscape trees.

Planting it properly

Ground-level work, entirely yours, and the first three steps decide the outcome.

1

Find the flare first

Scrape back the top of the root ball until the trunk visibly widens. Measure from there, not from the top of the pot.

2

Dig wide, not deep

Two to three times the root ball’s width and no deeper than the ball itself. The bottom should be undisturbed soil so it can’t settle.

3

Tease the roots out

Container stock circles at the edges. Loosen or cut circling roots, or they keep circling and eventually strangle the trunk.

4

Backfill with what you dug out

Not with imported compost. Rich backfill in a poor-soil hole discourages roots from ever leaving the hole.

5

Water deeply and slowly

At planting and regularly through the first two growing seasons. Frequent shallow watering trains roots to stay at the surface.

6

Mulch wide, clear of the trunk

A few inches deep out to the edge of the hole, with a gap around the stem itself.

What actually matters

Factor Effect Get it right?
Flare at or above grade Decides survival Critical
Hole width Root establishment Important
Circling roots cut Prevents strangulation Important
Native backfill Roots leave the hole Important
Deep infrequent watering Deep root system Important
Staking Usually unnecessary Only if exposed
Fertiliser at planting Little benefit Skip it

Where this stops being a DIY job

Anything near buried services. Gas, water, electricity and telecoms run shallower than people expect. Have them located before digging — it’s free in most places and the alternative is dangerous as well as expensive.

Large stock. Anything above what two people can move safely. Root balls are far heavier than they look and dropping one damages both the tree and whoever is holding it.

Choosing a species for a tight spot. Mature size, root behaviour near foundations and drains, and proximity to a boundary are worth an opinion. This is the decision people regret longest.

What a good planting crew does

Checks

Exposes the flare

Before the tree goes anywhere near the hole.

Digs

Wide and shallow

On undisturbed base so the tree can’t settle deeper later.

Advises

On mature size

Where it will be in thirty years, relative to the house and the drains.

Common questions

How deep should a tree be planted?

So the root flare — where the trunk widens into the roots — sits at or just above the finished soil level. Burying the flare is the most common cause of slow decline in landscape trees.

How wide should the planting hole be?

Two to three times the width of the root ball, and no deeper than the ball itself. Wide helps roots spread; deep lets the tree settle too low.

Should I stake a newly planted tree?

Usually not. Some movement builds a stronger trunk. Where a site is very exposed, stake low and loose and remove it after one season.

Should I add fertiliser when planting?

Generally no. What a new tree needs is water and room for roots. Feeding at planting adds little and can encourage top growth the root system can’t support.

Large stock, or a spot you’re not sure about?

Finding the flare, digging wide, cutting circling roots and mulching clear of the trunk are all yours, and they’re what decides whether the tree is alive in fifteen years. Species choice for a confined spot, and anything near buried services, are worth an opinion first.
