Why scooping comes before water
Flushing a channel packed with wet debris drives the whole lot into the downspout, and a blocked spout is a considerably worse job than the one you started with. Get the bulk out by hand first, into a bucket hooked over a ladder rung, and only then introduce water.
What to watch for while you’re up there
This is the one time a year anyone looks at the fascia. Press it where it’s stained — any give means the timber is soft, and that’s a bigger job than the one you came to do. Note where water pools rather than runs when you flush; a standing puddle marks a pitch problem, and knowing about it is useful even if you don’t fix it now.

Watch where water pools rather than runs. Standing water marks a low point you now know about.
Press the fascia
Where it’s stained. Soft timber behind the gutter is a bigger job, and this is the only time you’ll see it.
