Mosquito Lawn Treatment
Sold as a lawn treatment, and the lawn is the one part of the garden mosquitoes largely ignore. Knowing where they actually are makes the difference between a programme that works and one that doesn’t.

The short answer
Adult mosquitoes rest during the day in cool shaded vegetation — the underside of leaves, dense shrubs, ivy, tall grass at the boundary. Open sunny turf is too hot and dry, so spraying it accomplishes very little. A barrier treatment worth paying for targets the resting sites, paired with removing breeding water, which is almost always within a few feet of the house.

Plant saucers, a wheelbarrow, a bin lid, a child’s toy, a tarp fold. Some species complete a generation in a very small volume of water in about a week.

Why the gutter connection matters here
A gutter holding standing water is one of the more commonly overlooked breeding sites, and it’s the only one directly above where people sit. It’s also invisible — you can’t see into a gutter from a patio.
If pressure is worst near the house rather than at the boundary, get the gutters checked before booking a treatment programme. Clearing them and correcting the fall may be the whole answer.
What a real programme includes
Barrier treatment of resting sites, larvicide in water that genuinely can’t be drained, and a survey of the property for containers. A quote that’s only a scheduled spray is treating a third of the problem, and it’s the third that regenerates fastest.

A walk round with a bucket beats a treatment schedule.
Walk the property after rain
Anything holding water gets tipped. Saucers, toys, lids, tarps, buckets, a forgotten wheelbarrow.
Check the gutters
Standing water up there breeds directly above the patio. Clear them and check the fall.
Swap corrugated extensions
For smooth rigid ones. Each ridge in a flexible extension holds water.
Refresh birdbaths weekly
Weekly is enough to break the cycle for most species.
Larvicide what can’t be drained
Water butts, low areas, ornamental features. Bti products are widely available and specific to larvae.
Thin dense shade near seating
Ivy, dense shrubs, tall grass. That’s where the adults are during the day.
Where treatment belongs
Where this stops being a DIY job
Standing water you can’t drain or reach. A low area that won’t clear, or a neighbouring source. Larvicide has to reach it, and drainage work is a different job.
Treatment near a stream, pond or storm drain. Setbacks are regulated and some products are restricted regardless of distance.
Gutters above single storey. The usual reason a mosquito problem becomes a height problem.
