Lawn Care · Costs

Seed is the cheap part. You’re paying for prep and timing.

Professional lawn seeding costs about $0.07 to $0.23 per square foot in Lawn Love’s October 2026 cost guide, or $350 to $1,150 for a 5,000 sq ft lawn. Doing it yourself, the seed for that same lawn can cost under $150, so the decision is really about whether you can get seed onto soil and keep it damp for three weeks.

PRO SEEDING

$0.07–$0.23 per sq ft

HYDROSEEDING

$0.08–$0.21 per sq ft

TALL FESCUE SEED

$2–$6 per lb

VS. SOD

Sod is $1–$2 per sq ft installed

What lawn seeding costs in 2026

Two current cost guides land close together. Lawn Love’s lawn seeding cost guide, updated October 16, 2026, puts professional seeding at $0.07 to $0.23 per sq ft including labor and materials. HomeAdvisor’s cost to seed a lawn, updated June 20, 2026, gives $0.10 to $0.20 per sq ft, with most reseeding jobs between $438 and $1,758. The spread comes from method, grass type and how much prep the crew does.

Method Published cost Best for
Broadcast overseeding $0.07–$0.23 per sq ft (Lawn Love) Thickening a thin lawn, ideally right after core aeration
Slice (slit) seeding $0.08–$0.18 per sq ft (Lawn Love) Large thin areas; the machine cuts seed into the soil
Hydroseeding $0.08–$0.21 per sq ft (Lawn Love); $500–$4,000 per job (HomeAdvisor) Bare ground and slopes where mulch helps hold seed
New lawn from scratch $400–$1,500 (HomeAdvisor) Bare or renovated soil; prep and grading priced separately
Core aeration to pair with it $100–$400 (HomeAdvisor) Opening the surface so broadcast seed reaches soil
Labor only $45–$95 per hour (Lawn Love) Comparing quotes that split seed and labor

What grass seed costs by the pound

Price per pound is misleading on its own, because grasses are sown at very different rates. Kentucky bluegrass seed costs more per pound than tall fescue, but you need far less of it. The table pairs Lawn Love’s per-pound prices with the new-lawn rates from the UMass seeding rate fact sheet to show the cost of seed per 1,000 sq ft.

Grass Seed price per lb New-lawn rate, lb per 1,000 sq ft Seed cost per 1,000 sq ft
Tall fescue $2–$6 7–9 7 × $2 = $14 to 9 × $6 = $54
Perennial ryegrass $3–$8 7–9 7 × $3 = $21 to 9 × $8 = $72
Kentucky bluegrass $7–$15 1–2 1 × $7 = $7 to 2 × $15 = $30
Fine fescue $8–$14 4–6 4 × $8 = $32 to 6 × $14 = $84

Warm-season seed spans a much wider range in the same guide: Bermudagrass $3 to $12 per pound and zoysiagrass $8 to $41. For overseeding a cool-season lawn, use about half the new-lawn rate, which is how K-State Research and Extension frames it; that works out to 3.5 to 4.5 lb for tall fescue and ryegrass, 2 to 3 lb for fine fescue and 0.5 to 1 lb for Kentucky bluegrass per 1,000 sq ft. Full rates and a calculator are in how much grass seed do I need.

Worked example: a 5,000 sq ft tall fescue lawn

Here is the same yard priced six ways, using the published ranges above. The DIY lines cover seed only; add starter fertilizer, any aerator rental and your water bill.

Option Math Estimate
DIY overseed, seed only 5 × 3.5 lb = 17.5 lb at $2; 5 × 4.5 lb = 22.5 lb at $6 $35–$135
DIY new lawn, seed only 5 × 7 lb = 35 lb at $2; 5 × 9 lb = 45 lb at $6 $70–$270
Pro broadcast overseed 5,000 × $0.07 to 5,000 × $0.23 (Lawn Love) $350–$1,150
Pro slice seeding 5,000 × $0.08 to 5,000 × $0.18 $400–$900
Hydroseeding 5,000 × $0.08 to 5,000 × $0.21 $400–$1,050
Sod instead, for comparison 5,000 × $1.00 to 5,000 × $2.00 (HomeGuide, Oct 2025) $5,000–$10,000

HomeAdvisor’s per-square-foot range gives $500 to $1,000 for the same professional job (5,000 × $0.10 and 5,000 × $0.20), inside Lawn Love’s spread. The jump from seed to sod is roughly tenfold, which is why seeding wins whenever you have a good seeding window and can manage the watering.

What moves the price

  • Prep. A quote that includes core aeration or slit seeding costs more than a broadcast-only quote, and is usually worth it. Seed that sits on thatch rarely establishes.
  • New lawn vs overseed. A bare-soil seeding uses about twice the seed and often needs grading, topsoil or a soil test first, none of which are in a seeding-only price.
  • Grass type. The per-1,000 sq ft seed costs above range from $7 to $84, and premium warm-season seed runs higher still.
  • Lawn size. Lawn Love’s table scales in step with area: $70 to $230 for 1,000 sq ft and $350 to $1,150 for 5,000 sq ft. For a small patch job, ask whether you’re being priced by the foot or as a minimum visit.
  • Season. Fall is peak demand for cool-season seeding because it’s the right time. UMass puts the best New England window at roughly the third week of August to the third week of September; book early.

Don’t pay for seeding on top of an active crabgrass pre-emergent.

Most crabgrass preventers stop grass seed from establishing too, so seed spread inside their active window is money thrown on the ground, whether you spread it or a crew does. If your lawn had a spring pre-emergent, find out which product and wait out its label interval before you buy seed or book a service. The other expensive mistake is reseeding the same thin patch every year: repeated failure usually points at compaction, shade or drainage, and a soil test costs less than another bag.

If the area is large or you want it slit-seeded after aeration, LawnPhix’s lawn seeding page connects you with a lawn care company serving your area.

DIY or hire?

On a typical suburban lawn, overseeding is one of the easiest jobs to keep in-house. The cost difference in the worked example is several hundred dollars, and the step that decides the result, keeping the surface damp until germination, is yours either way. Hiring makes the most sense when you need a slit seeder on a big area, when the soil needs regrading first, or when you can’t be home to water. Our overseeding guide and how often to water grass seed cover the DIY route step by step.

Lawn seeding cost FAQs

How much does it cost to overseed a lawn?

Lawn Love’s October 2026 guide puts broadcast overseeding at $0.07 to $0.23 per sq ft, so $350 to $1,150 for 5,000 sq ft. Seed alone for a DIY tall fescue overseed on that area is about $35 to $135.

How much does it cost to seed a quarter acre?

Lawn Love lists $762 to $2,505 for a quarter acre with labor and materials.

Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod?

Much cheaper. At $0.08 to $0.21 per sq ft it is roughly a tenth of installed sod at $1 to $2 per sq ft, but it needs the same weeks of watering as any seeding.

Why is Kentucky bluegrass seed so expensive?

Per pound it is, at $7 to $15. Per square foot it’s often the cheapest cool-season option, because UMass sows it at only 1 to 2 lb per 1,000 sq ft.

Should I aerate before seeding?

On an existing lawn, yes, if you’re broadcasting. The holes give seed a place to meet soil. HomeAdvisor prices aeration at $100 to $400. See core aeration and overseeding.
