Over two years of integrating Kelp4less products into my lawn care regimen, months of experimenting, and countless hours of research and math, and it has come to fruition. I’m super excited to announce the new line of lawn care products from Kelp4less for 2021.

ON SALE NOW!

Designed to provide the same types of micro- and macronutrients that other big named products offer. These new mixes contain high quality humic acid, fulvic acid, sea kelp, sulfur, iron, molasses, iron and more! In its purest state – powdered and granular particles that you can actually see.

Everything contains sulfur. This ingredient is often overlooked when it comes to lawn care. We think of N-P-K, and more advanced lawn care phixers dive into humic acids and other soil amendments. But sulfur plays a big role in soil pH, and preventing chlorosis (when your grass starts to lose its green color and turns yellow – exactly what we don’t want!)

These are meant to be additions and supplements to your regular fertilizing plans — not replacements. Most of these will condition your soil over time by adding micros, carbon and bio-stimulants such as sea kelp. Everything also contains some Nitrogen to help see the visual effects. I will be using only the Kelp4less lawn care products on my own lawn in 2021.

For the best results, apply these products in the early evening (< 85 degrees) before your irrigation schedule. Example, if you water on Tuesday and Friday mornings, apply on Mondays or Thursdays.

And as they always say: ‘A little bit all the time is better than a lot once’. These can be spoon fed as frequently as weekly or bi-weekly. Links to purchase below!

Aeration + Yucca

Kelp4less Aeration + Yucca closeup

Application Rates: ~1 ounce by weight or two (2) Tablespoons per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. A 1 lb. package will cover up to 20,000 sq. ft.

Application Intervals: Apply every 4 weeks to help improve your soil composition and compaction. Water in with 1/4”-1/2” of water. Apply in the spring before the heat of the summer (April-June) to improve water absorption. Apply in the fall during overseeding (September-October).

Application Type: This is a suitable alternative to N-EXT Air-8

Game Changer: 5-0-25 blend with the addition of Yucca powder.

This biostimulant is a wetting agent – it also has surfactant capabilities that it prevents water beading on the brass blades when applied foliarly. Yucca is a desert plant, which of course faces extreme heat and drought conditions. It is naturally high in hormones and stimulants, which encourages the roots to absorb and uptake as much nutrients and water as possible. As you spray and throw more fertilizers on your lawn, Aeration + Yucca will allow these products (and water) to penetrate the soil better than ever.

According to the labels, N-Ext Air8 ™ contains 5% potash and 8% humic acid. One gallon of Air8 weigh 8.1 lbs. or 130 ounces. That means there is 6.5 oz. of potash and 10.5 oz. humic acid in the entire gallon. You can use about one ounce (or 2 Tablespoons) to get a similar amount of these two ingredients, plus the addition of Yucca.

(Note: not to be a replacement for mechanical aeration, particularly lawns with severely compacted or clay soils)

Thatch Eater

Kelp4less Thatch Eater

Application Rates: ~1 ounce by weight or two (2) Tablespoons per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. A 1 lb. package will cover up to 20,000 sq. ft.

Application Intervals: Apply late spring and summer following Aeration + Yucca applications to help break down thatch and excessive organic matter. For best results, apply foliar in the early evening the night before irrigating. Water in with 1/4” of water.

Application Type: This is a suitable alternative to N-EXT D-Thatch

Game Changer: 2-0-4 blend with the addition of enzyme powder.

This enzyme powder from kelp4less is derived from the Pepsin family of Enzymes. Working alongside molasses powder, this water soluble enzyme powder is extremely effective at breaking down organic matter. This can be used in the summer months or anytime throughout the growing season to help break down thatch and improve absorption of other nutrients.

20-04 Thatch Eater is also packed with 24% humic acid.

The other key ingredient is molasses powder. Molasses is a natural source of carbohydrates (sugars) and energy for your grass, and will help aid in the breakdown of thatch.

According to the labels, N-Ext D-Thatch™ contains 3% urea, and 4% each molasses, fulvic, and yeast blends. One gallon of D-Thatch weigh 9 lbs. or 144 ounces. That means there is approximately 4.5 oz. of urea, 6 oz. molasses, fulvic, and yeast in the entire gallon. You can use about one ounce (or 2 Tablespoons) to get a similar amount of these ingredients, plus enzyme.

(Note: not to be a replacement for mechanical aeration or power raking, particularly for turf with excessive thatch of 1/2″ or more)

35-0-0 Micro Greens

Kelp4less Micro Greens Nitrogen

Application Rates: 1-2 ounces by weight per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. A 1 lb. package will cover ~10,000 sq. ft.

Application Intervals: Apply when outside temperatures are < 85 degrees. For best results, apply foliar the night before irrigation. Apply 3-5 days before your big event to make your lawn ‘pop’. Water in thoroughly with 1/2” of water.

Application Type: This is a similar to GreeneEffect

Game Changer: Extra sulfur and iron

This 35-0-0 Micro Greens would make a great cocktail with 5-1-1 Green Balance, Extreme Blend or Green Lawn & Turf. Need to get your lawn ready for guests or an outdoor lawn party? Apply 2-4 oz. (by weight) of Micro Greens one week before your event (and follow the rest of our tips) for a quick green-up.

According to the labels, 7-0-0 GreeneEffect contains 7% Nitrogen, 6% iron, and 3% sulfur. One gallon of 7-0-0 weighs 10.5 lbs. or 168 ounces. That means there is a total of 12 oz. of Nitrogen, 10 oz. iron, and 5 oz. sulfur. You can use about 1.5 ounces to get similar amounts of these ingredients.

34-0-6 Greens Heavy Hitter

Kelp4less Heavy Hitter Nitrogen

Application Rates: 1 ounce by weight or two (2) Tablespoons per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft. You can use up to 4 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. of established turf for special occasions.

Application Intervals: Apply every 4 weeks. Can be used as a fertilizer  supplement or alternative for those looking to spread less nitrogen to healthy and established lawns. Water in with 1/4”-1/2” of rainfall or irrigation.

Application Type: A suitable replacement for N-Ext Greene Punch

Game Changer: Fast-release urea + iron

Greens Heavy Hitter contains fast-release water soluble urea nitrogen. This coupled with iron sulfate will help drive that dark green color we all yearn for. Heavy Hitter also contains high quality Potash (SOP) and a blend of Sea Kelp and Humic Acid to help nourish your soil. And with all of these products, Heavy Hitter contains sulfur which helps improves nutrient availability and enhance color.

According to the labels, N-Ext Greene Punch™ 18-0-1 contains 18% nitrogen, 5% humic acid, and about 1% each of sea kelp, potash, sulfur, and iron. One gallon of Air8 weigh 10.5 lbs. or 168 ounces. That means there is about 30 oz. of Nitrogen (about 2 pounds) potash and just shy of 2 oz. each of the remaining aforementioned ingredients. To match their 16 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. rates, you can use up to 4 oz. of Heavy Hitter to deliver similar rates.

5-1-1 Green Balance

Kelp4less Green Balance

Application Rates: 1-2 ounces by weight or four (4) Tablespoons per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft.

Application Intervals: Apply as your “every day” supplement. An all-purpose balanced lawn food with soluble micro and macro-nutrients. Apply evenly every 2-4 weeks throughout the growing season. For best results, apply in the early evening the night before irrigating.

Application Type: suitable alternative for the 0-0-2 MicroGreen and 7-0-0 GreenEffect combo.

Game Changer: Nine (9) beneficial ingredients all-in-one. N-P-K, Humic Acid, Iron, Sea Kelp, Molasses Powder, Sulfur, and Urea.

Carbon-Phix-Lawn-Fertilizer
Carbon Phix – an all-new Carbon X alternative

Carbon Phix (20-0-12)

Application Rates: 3 lbs./1,000 sq. ft. every 4-6 weeks as part of your lawn fertilization program

Application Type: A true alternative to Carbon X or CX DIY

Game Changer: Spiked with granular Extreme Blend

Carbon Phix is a new granular fertilizer and food for your lawn and soil. It is the best substitute for Carbon X fertilizer. It is a 20-0-12 blend with 14% sulfur, 12% carbon and potash (SOP), 6% iron, and 5% humic acid.

Best of all, each batch contains the Kelp4less flagship product, Extreme Blend (but in granular form). This popular product has been around for several years and has been an RGS Alternative. It’s packed with all essential L-Amino Acids, Fulvic Acid, Humic Acid, and Soluble Sea Kelp.

  • 20 lbs. covers 6,667 sq. ft.
  • 30 lbs. covers 10,000 sq. ft.

Summer Survival (5-0-25)

Application Rates: 1-2 ounces by weight or two-to-four (2-4) heaping/rounded Tablespoons per gallon per 1,000 sq. ft.

Application Type: A suitable replacement for any high potassium summer survival.

Game Changer: SOP, Sea Kelp & Humic Acid all-in-one

This Survival product is an all-in-one solution for stress relief from the hot, humid and dry summer months. Sea kelp aids in drought resistance, root development, and soil stimulant. Humic acid boosts root development, and helps in nutrient and water uptake. Turfgrasses that are deficient in potassium can be more prone to drought and stress.

Application Intervals: Begin spoon feeding Survival entering the summer and before your lawn gets stressed. Apply every 2 weeks before stressful conditions, including peak periods of fungus and diseases. If your town often imposes a water ban, apply Aeration + Yucca prior to Survival. This 1-2 combo will be your best weapon against drought and heat stress. Water in with 1/4″-1/2″ of irrigation or rainfall.

New to Kelp4Less?

Here’s some things to help you. I often mix a concentrate of Kelp4less solution in a gallon jug with a screw top (empty apple juice container). Use warm tap water to mix your solution, shake and allow to sit overnight. The next day, shake again as add your concentrated mix to your sprayer.

I have a My4Sons backpack sprayer and never experienced clogging ever. I strain it right through the basket filter, and it has a second reservoir filter at the bottom of the tank for good measure. So when mixed and strained should work just fine in every backpack sprayer.

If you want to mix the day-of and a larger mixture (for larger lawns) then you should use a bucket and paint mixer (below).

Important: If you have a fine mesh filter on your sprayer (particularly a Professional grade sprayer or tow behind) then you should consider the following items.

Reminder: Your water is different than other towns and wells. The water hardness, pH and many other factors can affect the dissolving of some ingredients.

  1. We just got a ton of rain in the mid Atlantic, I missed my Spring Feeding of potassium and my cool season grass may be dormant, would it still be ok to apply this?
